Meet Perth’s Latest Resident – Steven Sealberg, The Sorrento Seal

Much to the surprise of Perth locals, a two tonne Elephant Seal docked into Sorrento, a popular Western Australia Beach, on the 19th of February 2014, becoming Perth’s latest attraction.  Affectionately named ‘Steven Sealberg’ by Perth locals, the Sorrento seal has settled in and become a fascinating tourist attraction.

Known for its stunning beaches north of the city, hotel guests at Crowne Plaza Perth now have one more BIG reason to see what all of the fuss is about.

It is rare to see seals on WA beaches, and ‘Steven Sealberg’ seams pleased with Perth beaches and attention from onlooking fans.

On Saturday morning the Sorrento Seal, as he’s become known, disappeared into the ocean for a massive 9 hour swim, checking in at Scarborough dog beach, but later returned to his favourite spot at Western Australia’s Sorrento Beach.

DPaW Wildlife Officer Rick Dawson said the seal had been hunting at sea and came ashore to rest and moult.  It is possible that Steven could remain on the beach for up to a month.  One seal made Exmouth his home for five years.  People are being warned not to get too close as seals are very unpredictable and may react aggressively if they feel threatened.

The new resident is also creating opportunities for local businesses with crowds turning up by the hundreds daily to witness the spectacle, and hope he is here to stay – relaxing and soaking up the beautiful Perth weather, and bringing more business to the area.
